Skarstedt Gallery: The Intersection of Art and Legacy

In the dynamic world of contemporary art, Skarstedt Gallery stands as a vital bridge between the past and present. Founded in 1994 by Per Skarstedt, the gallery has become renowned for its dedication to curating museum-level exhibitions that spotlight both European and American artists. While it's celebrated for its historically significant showcases, Skarstedt also boldly engages with new works, constantly pushing the boundaries of contemporary artistic identity.

This gallery distinguishes itself by forging close relationships with artists and their estates, often reuniting iconic collections and offering profound retrospectives that capture pivotal moments in twentieth-century art history. Skarstedt's commitment extends to championing leading international artists and promoting their legacies through its gallery spaces in New York, London, and Paris.

The roster of artists and artists' estates Skarstedt collaborates with is nothing short of impressive, featuring the likes of Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, and many more. This multifaceted approach to contemporary art sets Skarstedt apart and ensures its place at the forefront of the art world.

EARLIER CAREER

Per Skarstedt's journey began in 1992 when he established the gallery. His first acquisition—a work by Richard Prince—showed early promise. Skarstedt set up shop in New York, opening his first gallery on the Upper East Side. It would be the beginning of a transformative artistic odyssey.

The gallery's growth was underscored by a series of strategic moves. In 2014, Skarstedt Gallery took over a vast gallery space in Chelsea, formerly occupied by Haunch of Venison, and reimagined it with the artistic vision of Annabelle Selldorf. By 2019, the gallery expanded further, unveiling a new space on New York's Upper East Side—a sprawling 25,000 square feet location on 64th Street.

FURTHER HIGHLIGHTS

Beyond New York, Skarstedt embarked on an international expansion. The gallery set up shop in London in 2012, a vibrant art hub that saw further growth with a second space opening in 2016. Skarstedt also ventured to the Hamptons, opening a gallery on Newtown Lane, providing art enthusiasts with a slice of the art scene amid the tranquility of East Hampton.

Additionally, in 2020, Skarstedt added a captivating pop-up gallery in Palm Beach, featuring notable works by Richard Prince and new sculptures by KAWS. This move allowed art lovers in Florida to immerse themselves in the creative universe curated by the gallery.

CURRENT HIGHLIGHTS

The most recent chapter of Skarstedt's global art journey unfolded in 2021 with the opening of its first Parisian location at 2 Avenue Matignon. Designed by the esteemed Jacques Grange, the gallery's French outpost is poised to contribute to the city's rich artistic tapestry.

In essence, Skarstedt Gallery is not only a testament to Per Skarstedt's profound passion for art but also a vibrant canvas where past and present converge, providing art enthusiasts around the world with a glimpse into the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary art.
